Our working places
Found just twenty-two miles from London in the county of Hertfordshire, the city of St Albans is infamous for higher housing prices, which are among the most expensive in Britain. St Albans keeps its historical roots, such as a 15th century clock tower. It was the first major town on the old Roman road Watling Street, and became the Roman city of Verulamium.
St Albans gets its name from the first British saint, Alban. The story is that he lived in Verulamium in the 3rd or 4th century when Christians were suffering persecution, and he met a Christian priest fleeing from persecutors. Alban sheltered the priest in his house and become so impressed with the priest’s faith that he converted to Christianity. When the persecutors searched his home, Alban pretended to be the priest and was punished in his place.
Before the 20th century, St Albans was a rural market town. In Victorian times, the town was small and there was very little industry, but by 1901 the population grew by 37% and there was much expansion and building. In the inter-wars years, St Albans became a centre for the electronics industry, and by the post-war years it expanded as a commuter town into London.
